I never thought I would miss rain...

This week my host mom and the two boys flew down to Perth, so a friend and I were able to take a short vacation to the city of Broome.  It was about an 8.5 hour drive north of Karratha. We were even more excited by the prospect of getting a really good thunderstorm and downpour while we were there as Broome is a tropical city.  Unfortunately we only got a little sprinkle but it was so nice to see some puddles and green plants everywhere!

They drive was not super exciting  but for part of the drive we got to see all of these huge termite mounds.

We arrived in Broome at around 2:45, perfect timing to attend the 3:00 crocodile feeding at the crocodile park.  Look how cute the ferocious little baby is!  I was surprised by how soft the crocodile skin actually felt.
The park has over 2,000 crocs of varying ages and sizes in the park.

This guy is Bluey and for those of you who don't know how big 5 meters is its over 16 feet!  I would really not want to see this guy swimming up alongside me on the beach.

One of the other highlights of the trip was riding a camel on the beach at sunset.  These camels have been captured from the wild and trained at the farm.  They were originally brought to Australia to work as pack animals in the mid 1800's but were then released into the wild when trains and other vehicles became more accessible.  Today camels are seen as pests as they drink the water and eat the food that is meant for the cattle.

I've now been on a one humped camel and a two humped camel.  I have to say the two humped camel was much softer and fluffier!

The sunset was beautiful and it was such a nice end to our day!
The next day we tried to find the fossilized dinosaur tracks at one of the beaches but the tide was not low enough so we had to settle for the concrete casts that have been made.

These signs were everywhere on the beaches.  We decided it was best to skip swimming in Broome.
Our final night in Broome, we went to see Captain Marvel in a 100 year old outdoor theater!  Sun Pictures was opened in 1908 and is still running.  It was really cool to see all the projectors that the cinema had used throughout the years. Its an outdoor cinema and you sit on canvas deck chairs outside under the stars! Its also cool/terrifying because the airport runway is just the next street over, halfway through the movie a jet came over our heads.

Now I have 75 days until I begin my travel adventures! Now I just need to spend the rest of that time preparing to attend UW-Milwaukee next fall!
